"Success is not something you chase. It’s something you embody. It’s something you choose moment by moment."
As we begin a new year, perhaps it’s time to ask new questions. Such as: What if your current definition of success is quietly draining you?
In today’s high-performance culture, success is often reduced to a checklist: the title, the house, the revenue milestone, the followers. These markers are visible, measurable, and often impressive… but do they actually make you feelsuccessful.
For years, I operated in high-stakes environments where external benchmarks were the currency of worth. I earned well. I performed well. And yet, I often didn’t feel successful. I had moments of satisfaction but most of the time I felt like I was sprinting on an invisible treadmill always reaching, never arriving. There was always more to prove — never quite enough.
That’s when I began asking a question that quietly changed everything: “How successful do I feel today?”
When Success Is Only External, We Lose Ourselves
When success is defined solely by outcomes outside of us, it becomes a trap. It disconnects us from our internal compass. It fuels comparison. It places our worth on a finish line that keeps moving.
Over time, this way of living can lead to burnout, imposter syndrome, chronic dissatisfaction, or a low-grade sense that something is missing, even when life looks “good” on paper.
The truth is this: success is not a one-time event. It’s a state.
An embodied one.
Success is the felt sense of alignment between who you are, what you value, and how you’re showing up in the world today, not someday.
The Power of Rewriting Success
Rewriting success means redefining the game on your terms. It means asking different questions:
- What values do I want to live by not just admire?
- Where do I feel most alive, most useful, most true?
- What kind of impact actually feels meaningful to me, not just impressive to others?
This is the shift from achievement as identity to alignment as strategy. It’s trading the pursuit of perfection for the practice of presence. It’s choosing success from the inside out.
Where Neuroscience Meets Wisdom
From a neuroscience perspective, when our actions align with our internal goals and values, we activate intrinsic motivation. This strengthens the brain’s reward circuits, reinforces self-trust, and builds long-term resilience.
From a yoga and mindfulness lens, this is known as Santosha. It’s contentment that doesn’t come from settling, but from conscious connection to the moment you’re in.
When modern science and ancient wisdom meet, we get something powerful: a sustainable model of success, one that energizes rather than exhausts.
An Invitation
Take one small step today.
Write down your current definition of success. Then rewrite it… not based on what you should want, but on how you want to feel.
Notice what shifts.
Whenever I do this exercise with clients, the goals change. They may have come to me to achieve purely economic gains and then realize that their soul-aligned definition of success is so much broader and can be experienced right now. To top that, they often receive inspiration on how to achieve those financials targets sooner and with more ease! How? Because they have tuned their minds to what they really want… and the Universe, as well as the Reticular Activating System of the brain, points them in the right direction.
Clients often include their significant other in our exercises and, together, they envision and strategically create a plan for a more fulfilling life. Sometimes, it simply involves subtle shifts in perspective and use of energy. Other times it can be dramatic — realizing that the work they’re doing is literally killing them, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The biggest “Aha” is the reminder that they have the power to choose. You don’t have to wait for success to be bestowed on you. You don’t have to earn the right to feel aligned. Once you know who you really want to be, you can live into success right now.
