I am a verifiable nerd and have been gleefully diving into the AI pool of game-changing tools to brainstorm, increase productivity, and transform my business. Yet, I still believe that in an age of artificial intelligence, the most powerful thing you can be is fully human.
Tech Roots, Human Focus
First, a little context on just how nerdy I am…
I’ve been an early tech adopter since junior high school, programming games in BASIC and exploring COBOL via punch cards. Those in my generation may remember that before disks came on the scene. In college, I tutored statistics while studying Sociology and Design, and then conducted predictive analysis at Harvard Business School as a Research Associate.
When the internet hit the public in 1991, I jumped in soon thereafter, founding VH1 Online and VH1@Work Radio. I designed the network’s first site on AOL and dabbled in HTML as I led teams of creatives and project managers. Then, I helped launch six digital cable networks.
Even after leaving MTV Networks to start a wellness business (partially to heal myself after almost dying), I created software for a former boss, and as a consultant, helped a multi-billion-dollar TV retailer drive revenue with a Qlik-powered dashboard. Let’s just say: I love tech. I get tech.
The Future of Work Is Human-Centered and AI-Augmented
AI is already transforming industries from manufacturing and finance to legal and customer service. Anything rule-based and repetitive is ripe for automation. Still, as machines get faster, smarter, and more efficient, our uniquely human qualities become more valuable.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, the top 10 skills right now include:
Most of these aren’t technical. They’re human. By 2030, AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and environmental stewardship get added to the list and technological literacy moves up, with the rest still being human-first skills.
Skills like agility, influence, empathy, and motivation live in the nervous system. They’re not just cognitive, they’re embodied. If you have an expansive, neuroscience-based framework, like what we teach in Embodied Success®, you’ll have an advantage. You’ll know how to regulate your nervous system, connect to intuition, and lead with grounded clarity.
Embodiment Provides Internal Bandwidth
Embodiment is how you access biointelligence, a kind of full-system wisdom AI can’t touch. Neuroscience shows that when the nervous system is regulated your prefrontal cortex (involved in executive function) works better, you shift from survival mode to creativity, compassion and clarity increase, and co-regulation builds trust in teams.
I’m not talking about sitting cross-legged on a cushion (though meditation is one of my personal go-to tools). Embodiment means accessing intuition in high-stakes decisions, staying grounded in uncertainty, noticing dysregulation in your system, communicating with integrity under pressure, and pausing before reacting.
It’s internal bandwidth, and it’s what allows you to lead with both clarity and connection.
AI Proficiency + Human Mastery
Do you still need to be AI proficient? Yes. It’s the language of our era.
Think of AI as your assistant, not your replacement. It can enhance your strategy, and free you up to innovate, connect, and collaborate. However, you don’t need to become a developer to stay relevant. What you do need is adaptability and human-first fluency.
AI excels at pattern recognition and prediction, but it can’t replicate:
- Trust built in conversation
- Ethical decision-making
- Intuitive insight
- Calm under pressure
- Energetic presence
- Emotional attunement
These are human-only domains (at least for now), and they rely on both emotional and somatic intelligence. Unfortunately, many high performers have learned to override these with logic, speed, or external performance metrics. That was a different era. In this one, embodied intelligence becomes your competitive edge.
Want to Future-Proof Your Leadership?
Start here:
- Build basic AI literacy… enough to explore tools and relevant use cases.
- Use AI to increase productivity, but don’t outsource critical thinking.
- Develop emotional regulation, somatic awareness, and communication presence.
- Practice “listening with your whole body” to access embodied insight.
- Track your state: Are you reactive or regulated before key decisions?
- Take 2 to 3 micro-resets a day to recalibrate your nervous system.
- Establish rhythms of rest, reflection, and recovery to sustain leadership presence.
Also, ask yourself: What does AI automation in my work free me up for? How can I leverage my human skills and insights to add more value to the process as a leader?
The future of work isn’t just digital; it’s deeply human. The leaders who succeed will be the ones who constantly evolve and hold the pace of change without losing their center.
AI may be the brain of the future, but you are the wisdom keeper.
Teresa Kay-Aba Kennedy
We still need humans to ask better questions, apply insights with discernment, build trust and shared vision, call out decisions that may cross ethical lines, and lead with presence and integrity. These are your differentiators in the AI era, and they’re trainable.
Remember: The more artificial intelligence evolves… the more embodied intelligence becomes your edge.
