“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” —Viktor Frankl
Have you ever hit send too quickly on an email only to regret it moments later or snapped back in a meeting then wished you had paused first?
When was the last time you paused intentionally? I don’t mean taking a vacation. I mean the split-second kind of pause that interrupts your habitual reaction and returns you to presence; the pause that gives you just enough space to make a conscious choice. In a world moving faster than ever, what if the most powerful leadership skill isn’t speed, but stillness?
In my work with high-performing professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives, I’ve found this kind of pause is often the difference between burnout and sustainability, disconnection and empathy, reactivity and true leadership. Yet, in our go-go-go culture, pausing is often seen as weakness. The tendency is to push forward and react immediately.
I once worked with a CEO who shared a story about a high-stakes board meeting. Tensions were running high, investors were impatient, and everyone was demanding quick answers. Instead of blurting out a rushed response, he paused. Just one breath. That pause shifted the entire room. His calm became contagious, and what could have escalated into conflict turned into constructive dialogue. Later he told me: “That pause probably saved the deal.”
The ability to pause is not just a personal mindfulness hack. It’s a leadership skill; a nervous system upgrade. It’s a direct route to Embodied Success®.
The Secret Reset Button
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo. When stress hits, your nervous system can get hijacked. The amygdala, the brain’s threat detector, floods your system with stress hormones. Your body tenses. Your field of vision narrows. That’s when reactivity shows up as defensiveness, anger, or impulsive decision-making. Your ability to think creatively shrinks. The prefrontal cortex goes offline. That’s the part of the brain responsible for strategy, emotional regulation, empathy, and wise choices. You may not notice it in the moment, but your responses become driven by automatic patterns shaped by fear, habit, or ego.
Neuroscientists call this “amygdala hijack.” Leaders often call it regret.
Here’s the good news: your nervous system has a built-in reset button. It’s called the pause. The moment you pause — take a breath, feel your feet, tune into your body — you begin to shift from the sympathetic (fight-flight-freeze) state of the nervous system into the parasympathetic (rest-digest) state. Even a few seconds of an intentional pause activates the prefrontal cortex. In that space, your nervous system shifts into a state of presence and choice. The pause is not a delay. It’s not weakness. It’s strategic power.
Pausing doesn’t just feel better. It can drive insight and expand your leadership capacity. Harvard research on emotional regulation found that leaders who can pause and regulate their state not only make better decisions; they strengthen trust with their teams. Pausing is the most direct way to reset your physiology so you can respond with clarity instead of compulsion.
In Zen, teachers remind us that silence is often more powerful than words. It is not absence. It is presence. In yoga, the pause has always been revered. The Sanskrit word kumbhaka refers to the still point between breaths: a moment of suspension that opens the door to clarity. Neuroscience validates this: pausing between stimulus and response interrupts reactivity and opens space for conscious choice. Just 90 seconds of conscious breathing can downshift your nervous system, reduce cortisol, and re-engage executive function.
Why It Matters in the Age of AI
Artificial Intelligence is brilliant at speed. It can process more data in a second than we could in a lifetime, but here’s the paradox: in the AI era, the most valuable leadership skill is not speed, but discernment.
AI cannot pause. It cannot feel the subtle emotional currents in a conversation, weigh the ethical impact of a decision, or sense the silence in a room. That is distinctly human.
As the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report highlights, skills like emotional intelligence, resilience, and creativity are rising to the top of what leaders will need in the future of work. Pausing is the access point to all of these. It’s the moment that allows space for empathy, for reframing, for innovation.
The world doesn’t need faster reflexes from leaders. It needs wiser responses. Pausing creates space to reclaim your presence in high-stakes decisions, redirect reactive patterns, and reconnect to your values and long-term vision.
In essence, the pause is a portal: a moment where embodied leadership and conscious action become possible. The pause is a power move.
Action Steps
Want to reclaim your presence in the middle of pressure? Try this simple practice:
- Notice the Hijack. When you feel your chest tighten or your jaw clench, pause.
- Breathe. Take one slow, deep breath. Exhale fully.
- Name It. Say quietly to yourself: “I am pausing.”
- Choose Freshly. Ask: What response aligns with my values, not just my reflex?
It takes less than 10 seconds, yet it shifts everything. Over time, you may notice how much reactivity was running the show, and how, when you pause, you are more intuitive.
The next time urgency grips you, remember: your nervous system has a secret reset button. Press it, pause and watch how much more effective you become. Pausing isn’t stepping back; it’s stepping into presence, power, and impact.
